The Wine
Mount Etna is the highest and most active volcano in Europe. Any grape grower knows not to plant their vines in one single block, because you don't know where the next eruption will blast from! Winemaker Filipe Mangione says "Everything is so intense here – the nature, volcano, soils and climate." Yet he wouldn't choose anywhere else to be a grower or a winemaker. His vines lie at 700 metres altitude, so the grapes ripen beautifully, as well as retain lifted aromas and freshness which allow his wines to age. Carricante is the speciality grape for whites here, lending delicate pear, peach, floral and herb character and a vibrant, flinty edge. Very elegant and beautifully poised. A superb aperitif or seafood white and ace with risotto.
