Flavour Profile
Rioja is famous for its mature, complex red wines and the Reservas and Gran Reservas can be superb. But when the locals pour a glass at the end of the day, it’s the silky red fruit and spicy oak of Rioja Crianza, like this one from Altos de Rioja, that they look to.
Bordeaux-born Jean-Marc Sauboua has long been our Trophy-winning winemaker at Château La Clarière. In 2006, he started a winery of his own and, with Spanish blood, decided Rioja was his destination. His aim: to make a Grand Cru of Rioja. The old vines lie above 700 metres, some of the highest in Rioja, to ensure an elegant style.
Jean-Marc has won so many medals since 2006 that we’ve lost count. He’s taken home ‘Winery of the Year’, ‘Rioja of the Year’ and ‘Best in Show Crianza Rioja’. And the 2021 vintage has a staggering 10 Gold medals.
Five years’ ageing has created a silky-smooth wine with heaps of dark berry fruit and savoury oak complexity. It’s luscious and charming, a great pairing for hearty casseroles, roast game or hard cheeses.
