Winemaker at Flagstone Gerhard Swart isn’t the type of person to let a little drought stop him making the best wine he possibly can. In 2018, the driest Cape vintage in living memory, he set sail on a voyage of discovery to find the juiciest, ripest Pinotage. The follow up vintage, 2019, wasn't any easier – it was the smallest on record due to the previous year's drought. Still, a small vintage can lead to a more concentrated, fruitier wine. That is certainly true of this tasty red, thanks to Gerhard's skill at picking the grapes at the right moment, and treating them with the deftest of touches in the winery. This Pinotage is beautifully balanced, with bright fruit and a lick of toasty spice. Supple, it's very tasty with or without food.
