This is a rare white from the foot of northern Rhône’s hallowed hill of Hermitage, in Crozes Hermitage, where vineyards mostly produce fine reds. The characterful white Rhône grape Marsanne ripens to absolute perfection in this suntrap spot. In the hands of third-generation winemaker Marcel Guigal, it produces a rich white Crozes of remarkable balance and grace. That’s particularly true in a great vintage like 2020, which despite the heat, produced lovely fresh wines. With enticing blossom hints, honeyed stone fruits, lush spice (from part ageing in second fill barrels) and bright minerality, this wine has become richer with time. Open early and serve with cream-sauced white meats or salmon en croûte.
