The hugely enthusiastic and always passionate Michel Chapoutier is one of the Rhône's most famous characters. Since he took control of this long-established firm in 1988, quality has soared. Chapoutier now produces the most diverse and complex wines to be found in the northern Rhône. They are particularly well-known for their remarkable Hermitage wines. Like this Les Meysonniers 2017. Produced using organic methods and using fruit from 25 year old vines, this is a fine, expressive Syrah. Full bodied, yet elegant with lovely blackberry, cassis with a herbal lift. It is nearly all aged in vat, with just 15% going into barrel, so the fruit really sings out. Open a half hour early and decant. A fine match any roast meats or a rich casserole.

"A gently smoky edge to the ripe and complex, dark-fruited nose with brambly, spiced red plums" James Suckling
