Chat with Vinny
We’re back with our new series ‘Tips from the Tasting Room,’ showcasing the wines that Laithwaites’ staff are getting really excited about right now. Our second wine is a Sicilian white, Kew Gardens Carricante, chosen by our Senior Content and Social Media Manager, Evie.
Our Kew Gardens range is a collaboration between Laithwaites and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. The aim is to champion wines that feature rare grape varieties – helping to rescue these endangered vines and support biodiversity, while creating uniquely delicious wines. We also occasionally focus on wine producers that are going the extra mile to promote biodiversity in their region.
Carricante is the almost-forgotten jewel of Sicily. It used to be grown all over the island but is now found almost exclusively on the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna, where it has been cultivated for for at least a thousand years.
With such a small area of production, there’s barely enough Carricante being made for local demand. That’s why it’s hardly ever seen in the UK. But thanks to the efforts of passionate winemakers and partnerships like this one, with Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, Carricante is on the rise again.
What’s more, Carricante is now getting the attention it deserves, with The Guardian calling it “one of Italy’s most distinctive grapes … at its scintillating best on the slopes of Mount Etna.”
As with all the wines in our Kew Gardens range, the label design features artwork from the archives of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew – and we hope you agree that it looks absolutely gorgeous. For other examples, take a look at the other wines in the range:
Kew Gardens Rosso Incognito, a silky red made from the rare Ancellotta grape.
Kew Gardens Crémant de Loire Rosé, a gorgeous pink fizz.
Kew Gardens Blanc de Cabernet, a groundbreaking sparkling white make from red grapes.
High, rolling vineyards, gentle sea breezes and unique volcanic soils provide the perfect conditions for Carricante grapes to ripen – bringing out their bright, minerally character.
Kew Gardens Carricante is a classic example – bright and zingy, with subtle hints of white stone fruits, lemon, floral and light peach aromas, and a crisp, mineral finish.
The versatility of this wine is shines through its food pairings. It’s freshness and subtle fruit flavours make it an excellent match for seafood – especially grilled fish and shellfish – as well as risotto and light, creamy pasta dishes. Its crisp acidity also makes it a great match for spicy Asian foods like traditional Thai dishes or curries.
To enjoy this deliciously citrusy white at its best, serve chilled, between 9 and 11°C. Then, when you’re ready to drink, pour into a glass with a narrow top to best appreciate it’s floral aromas.
