Britain’s favourite wines – revealed

Posted on December 9, 2024 by Chris Larkin

Across Britain, wine preferences vary by city and town, with each region showing a distinct preference for grape varieties. From bold reds to crisp whites, discover what wines people love in your area.

Discover your town’s signature wine

Ever wondered what your wine taste says about where you live? We took a deep dive into our customer data to see which wine grapes were most popular in different towns across the UK. And the results might surprise you.

As you’d expect – some grapes are more popular everywhere. Sauvignon Blanc, for example, is Britain’s favourite grape overall. But every city and town we looked at also had its own signature style – that ONE wine that was more popular there than anywhere else.

From Aberdeen to Plymouth – a tour of Britain’s wine tastes

You can find our full breakdown of which grape was best loved in which city on our Grape Britain page – including an interactive map so you can quickly find your local speciality. But here are a few highlights:

Aberdeen – everyone loves Sauvignon Blanc, but Aberdonians favour it more than anyone else! Crisp and refreshing – it’s a sophisticated white that reflects the city’s charm and vibrancy.

Cardiff has a clear affinity with Touriga Nacional – a Portuguese grape that makes richly flavoured reds with oodles of warming black fruit.

London drinks more Melon de Bourgogne per person than any other city. Which makes more sense when you know that it is the grape behind Muscadet – a fabulously refreshing seafood white that’s a must on any decent bistro wine list!

Manchester – Mancunians love for Albariño shows that they have their finger on the pulse. This zesty Spanish white is bang on trend – but still just a bit niche.

York – The historic city of York prefers Garnacha, a Spanish red known for its bold fruit flavours and smooth finish.
