The Story Behind the Bottle
Today English fizz is recognised as “a world-class product” (Decanter). As usual, the Laithwaite family have been leading the way, with Barbara’s Trophy winning Wyfold and Henry’s Harrow & Hope. Until 2010 Henry had been making reds in Oz and Bordeaux, but on his return to England, he and his wife Kaye planted a 6.2 hectare vineyard in Marlow with Chardonnay and both Pinots and built a new winery in 2013. Henry’s had some of the best names advising him – Tony Jordan of Australia’s Moët et Chandon and the UK’s late King of Fizz Mike Roberts. From a spectacular Pinot vintage – long, cool and aromatic – with a third of the wine barrel fermented and an extra year of lees ageing, the 2015 is even richer, with superb complexity and elegance.
