How to buy the perfect wine for Mother’s Day

Did you know that the earliest formal celebrations of motherhood go right back to the times of the ancient Greeks and Romans? And it’s those early civilisations that first cultivated vines. So, it’s official (sort of), wine and Mother’s Day go hand in hand!

Mind you, after all that time you’d think we’d know exactly what to get Mum on her special day. But the wealth of choice can be a little bewildering. However, when there’s a bit of thought and a lot of love behind your selection, you simply can’t go wrong.

Here are a few styles and recommendations that cannot fail to put a smile on her face. And, if you’re helping mum to celebrate, you might just get a delicious glassful too!

What’s the perfect rosé wine gift Mother’s Day?

Well, rosé now comes in a wide range of styles and shades. But if you want to give her the pink wine of the moment, it’s got to be from Provence.

The region is the world epicentre for exquisite rosé. From that pale salmon pink hue to the subtle berry flavours and gentle savoury notes, everything about Provence rosé says class and style.

You’ll find all those qualities in Domaine Pontfract. It comes from a beautiful estate run by dapper Monsieur Paul, veteran winemaker and master of Provence rosé. L’Arte Provençal is another top choice. It hails from a family estate and delivers delicate summer berry flavours and a citrus-fresh finish.

If you really want to make a statement, buy the two wines together in a Provence rosé gift set. It’ll arrive in a lovely wooden box just to make things extra special.

What if mum prefers a sweeter style of wine? Petticoat White Zinfandel from California will 100% hit the spot. It’s crammed with juicy summer berry flavours and has a lovely freshness to balance its gentle sweetness.

Want to send a sparkling gift on Mother’s Day?

A bottle of stylish fizz is the ultimate celebration bottle for mum’s special day. But which style should you go for?

Prosecco is always well received. It’s just such an easy-going sparkler with gentle orchard fruit flavours and a crisp, refreshing finish. You can’t go wrong with classic Italian bubblies like alpine-fresh Alessandro Gallici or Sicily’s sun-ripe Il Papavero Prosecco.

Of course, if you really want to impress, no other wine expresses love and affection quite like a bottle of Champagne. The gorgeous bottle shape, the fine beads of bubbles, the elegant fruit flavours and the creamy mousse … it’s a fizz that will surely delight every wine-loving mum.

Especially if you choose an iconic Grand Marque Champagne like Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label Brut or Laurent Perrier La Cuvée. Or, staying with L-P, how about their Rosé Brut, presented in a smart branded gift box? A pink Champagne of impeccable credentials and finesse.

Our very own Laithwaite Champagne Blanc de Blancs Premier Cru comes very highly recommended too. It’s complex, elegant and wonderfully fresh – and offers exceptional value for money.

Talking of value, Cava remains a fabulous buy and mum can’t help but be impressed by a top release like Barcelona Hola Organic Brut. Made like Champagne, it’s bursting with green fruit flavours that are delivered on lively, long-lasting bubbles.

What red wine is the best Mother’s Day gift?

Do you think mum would like something silky smooth and exceptionally classy? Then it has to be a Pinot Noir. Burgundy is home to the most classic expressions of this wonderful grape, and you can’t go wrong with a soft, berry-scented release like Domaine Bernard Moreau.

But if mum prefers a riper, fruitier style of red then Pinot Noir from New Zealand will make her day. Marlborough region’s Rapaura Springs is crammed with spiced dark cherry and has a long, velvety finish while Invivo offers all the vivid dark cherry flavours that hallmark the best releases from South Island’s Central Otago region.

Or, with spring just round the corner, maybe go for something lovely and light that you can serve gently chilled. Great Beaujolais fits the bill perfectly. Cuvée des Pierres Dorées is proving very popular right now. It’s from the region’s ‘Golden Stones’ vineyards and delivers floral aromas and beautifully soft raspberry and strawberry flavours.

Italian Frappato is another style sure to go down a storm on Mother’s Day. Sicily’s w/o showcases this up-and-coming grape to cherry-fresh perfection. It also comes in recycled, ‘wild’ glass that has variations of colour and tiny bubbles. No two glass bottles of w/o are exactly the same – very apt on a day when you’re treating the mum who’s one of a kind

What white wine should you give on Mother’s Day?

You could play it safe and go for a sure-fire winner like Sauvignon Blanc. Our No.1 Sauvignon is Abbesse from the Loire Valley’s Bougrier family and we’re sure that mum will love its easy-going lemon and lime flavours. We also have a raft of intensely aromatic, world class Kiwi Sauvignons including Hunter’s Estate from the ‘First Lady’ of New Zealand wine, Jane Hunter.

Staying with super-fresh whites, you can’t go wrong with South Africa’s Gooseberry Bush. It’s brimming with lively green fruit flavours and is so seductive, it’s our bestselling white from anywhere in the world.
