We put all these food-friendly Italian reds to the test at our staff barbecue and they passed with flying colours. Gorgeously rich Saracosa – a barrel-aged Gold medal winner from Tuscany – was superb with steaks, while the juicy black fruit flavours of Pillastro and Torretta del Lago (from scooter riding Leonardo Urso) went well with herby grilled sausages. Special mention too for Tenuta Fenice, a spicy big red from hilltop vineyards that withstood an earthquake 50 years ago.
