Founded in 1850 by the eponymous Raymond Lafon, this small, 18-hectare estate is magnificently placed next door to the world's most expensive sweet wine estate, Château d'Yquem, and close to Suduiraut too. Indeed, current owners – the Meslier family – for a few years ran both Yquem and Raymond Lafon, which explains why the two are produced using almost the exact same methods. Sauternes is a painstaking process, every berry blessed with 'noble rot' and picked by hand, berry by berry. The noble rot (or botrytis) punctures the skin, so the moisture within evaporates and sugar becomes even more intense. No wonder you'll discover such sweet intensity and mesmirising complexity in this golden wine. Chill and enjoy with tarte tatin and the like.
