With over 40 styles and 4,000 brands available, Bavaria is a mecca for beer fans – and one brewery stands out from all the others. Perched on the hill which gives it its name, overlooking the town of Freising, stands the Weihenstephan brewery which, almost a thousand years ago, provided the beer for thirsty Benedictine monks. Today the heirs to Saint Korbinian (who founded the original monastery and planted its hop garden in AD 750) have access to the latest in brewing technology as well as an unrivalled tradition to draw upon. This is their Kristall Weissbier – a clear golden wheat beer with a gently hoppy aroma that’s perfect to enjoy on its own at any time. It’s also excellent with fish and shellfish – and spicy Bavarian sausage.
