  • Gold, Concours General Agricole de Paris, 2017

A superb, Merlot rich claret that nearly every vintage wins Gold. It’s from the often overlooked Saint Emilion satellite of Puisseguin and offers tremendous value as well as acres of rich plum and blackcurrant intensity. Delicious now or cellar.

A consistently great claret that most years scoops a Gold – we have high expectations for the 5-Star 2015 vintage. Tony Laithwaite has been buying wine from Guibeau’s owner Henri Bourlon for over 50 years. In the 1860s a member of the Bourlon family helped conquer Mexico under the French emperor Napoleon III, then married and settled there. Many years later Henri’s father came to Europe to study. Having fallen ill, he was told the country air of Puisseguin was the best cure. There he met his wife, whose family owned Château Guibot La Fourvieille. He stayed in Bordeaux and bought Vieux Château Guibeau next door. Its six hectares of old vines grow top quality grapes and produce this well structured, silky claret. A fine partner to roast beef.

"Plummy, bramble, Merlot-dominated blend, it will age well if you can resist. Terrific value" Terry Kirby
