89-91pts, The Wine Advocate, 2019

High Parker points for this handcrafted, old vine Carignan Syrah. It's from Boris Kovac’s tiny cellar, dug into the hillside in the wilds of the Roussillon. Using grapes from vines up to a century old, this red has intense red fruit and spicy length.

Boris Kovac is something of a purist at his cellar in deepest Roussillon. His property is completely off the grid, with electricity from a generator, water from a well. In 2013 he completed a tiny cellar - a simple room, with all the necessary kit - dug into the hillside, so even in summer it's cool. His pride and joy, however, are his 11 hectares of vineyards - 48 year old Syrah and Carignan that's over 100. Picked bunch by bunch and fermented in the tiny cellar, it's quite a treasure. Made in a very accessible style with a little oak ageing, this is supple, ripe and full of the flavours of the warm south. A rewarding glass on its own, it’s even better with richly sauced beef, cassoulet of duck and sausage or a vegetarian lasagne.

"Roussillon's lovely warm, ripe fruit and wild herb aroma – a deliciously easy, characterful red" Mark Hoddy
