Vajra Albe 2017

Barolo DOCG

Wine Advocate described Vajra as "one of the most exciting estates to watch today". 2017 was a hot vintage, the upshot of which small yields and this intensely flavoured, tensile, rich red from this great, family-run winery.

There are few regions in Italy that can compete with Piedmont for range of grapes, styles of wines and sheer quality. One of Piedmont’s finest family estates is that of Aldo Vajra – a traditionalist who makes an outstanding Barolo, Dolcetto and Barbera among his reds. Aldo prides himself on the elegance and complexity of his wines. For his superb Albe Barolo he takes grapes from three carefully chosen vineyards – Fossati, Coste di Vergne and La Volta – that range in altitude from 400 to 440 metres, with different soils and exposures to the sun. Together, they produce a single harmonious wine of elegance and finesse. Intense layers of plum, wild cherry, floral and tar hints, this calls out for game or wild mushroom croustade. Best cellared.
