Jean-Charles Duran has a tiny vineyard in the hottest, driest village of all France. That’s Roussillon’s Maury, overshadowed by the eerie ruins of a medieval Cathar castle, Queribus. Here the soil isn’t earth, but slivers of slate that confine old vines to growing no more than a few bunches of grapes. This, along with the fierce Tramontane wind reputed to drive people to madness (hence Un Vent de Folie), and the scorching sun, results in yields as low as 8 hl per hectare. Grenache is Jean-Charles’ main grape, with a touch of Syrah and Carignan. He does every task by hand, ageing the wine in hogsheads for 15 months before bottling his treasure, unfiltered. It’s a powerful red, best decanted an hour beforehand. Enjoy with hearty meat dishes.
