Italy's noble Aglianico grape is adored for its intense, but delicate fruit and layers of complexity, which put it alongside Nebbiolo for quality. Wines from Vulture are known as ‘the Barolo of the South’ but come at a sensible price. The region lies on the slopes of the extinct volcano, Monte Vulture. Its mineral-rich soils add complexity, while high altitude (800m) means it has one of the longest growing seasons in Italy. Tre Stelle is made by a small cellar, where winemaking is overseen by Alberto Antonini – formerly in charge at the Antinori cellar. He works here with talented Dennis Verdicchia to make wines that capture the character of this unique region. Tobacco spice with fresh red fruit, it's great with slow-cooked lamb or pasta.
