These two red grapes are complete fraudsters when it comes to name – there’s nothing petite about them! Whatever, these partners in crime have made this gorgeous, rich California red with lots of big black fruit, chocolate and spice flavour.

If you’re a lover of big black reds such as The Boxer or Black Stump, try a glass of The Clink. It features California’s unique Petite Sirah grape, which is none other than the Australian star Durif! Here it joins forces with another meaningful variety that’s more black than red, to lend a punch of chocolatey plum and blueberry notes to Petit Verdot’s inky dark, violet and pepper blackcurrant fruit. They are certainly equally adept at producing hefty reds, especially when ripened in full Californian sunshine, and make a great partnership. Heartily recommended with a warming beef stew, roast lamb or char-grilled offerings from the barbie. In winter, it’ll be a great fireside partner. For now, open early and decant. It'll cellar well too.
