One of the most successful wines from South Africa’s modern era. Marc Kent carefully tweaks each vintage of The Chocolate Block to produce the best wine for that year. The Syrah-dominated 2020 is brooding with succulent black fruits and mocha spice.

Boekenhoutskloof winery’s Marc Kent has helped place Swartland on the world’s wine map as a top-class producer of red blends. The Chocolate Block is a shining example. Marc tweaks the mix each vintage so no two Chocolate Blocks are the same, but each release is the very best wine for that year. The 2020 fruit is mostly from the Porseleinberg (described by Tim Atkin MW as “one of the world’s great Syrah vineyards”) and Goldmine farms. Black-fruited, peppery Syrah dominates with further richness from Grenache, Cinsault, Cabernet Sauvignon and Viognier. Parcels are matured in French oak barrels adding spice and chocolatey notes. Delicious now but showing a youthful elegance for ageing – if you can resist! Grilled meats on the brai heaven!
