Tenuta di Somaro Aglianico Primitivo 2014

Puglia IGP

A long time in the making – from the painstaking renovation of the vineyard to the wine’s slow maturation in barrel – this dense red is worth the wait. From talented winemaker Mario Ercolino, highly rated by the critics, the wine is rich and spicy.

Decanter magazine awarded the launch vintage of this “darling of a wine” a stunning 92 points, and the 2014, just out, is every bit as impressive. It’s all down to a patch of ancient and forgotten Aglianico and Primitivo vines, discovered by talented winemaker Mario Ercolino while tramping through the northern Puglian countryside. Realising their potential, he tracked down the owner and persuaded him to coax them back into production. Between them they christened the vineyard Somaro, after the rare breed of donkeys that once worked the land. Mario matured this wine for six months in small French oak casks, bottling with minimal filtration to preserve its flavour and complexity. Enjoy with roast beef, spicy pasta or a hearty casserole.

"Super Puglian wine. As it says on the label, rich and full-bodied!" Online Review
