Montecucco lies in Maremma and borders some of Tuscany’s top terroirs – including Bolgheri and Brunello di Montalcino. Being so recently designated, its wines offer superb value for now. This is a top class red with gorgeous savoury cherry intensity.

Tuscany’s Maremma is home to legendary wines like Sassicaia and Ornellaia. Now taste a red from an exciting new DOC within it – Montecucco – which is currently making waves with its intense, rich reds. Tenuta di Montecucco, its most prominent producer, has already scooped a 90 point Parker rating for its top wine. Some of the DOC is planted on the warm plains, where the wines are heartier, but this property’s vines grow on rocky soils not far from the Tyrrhenian Sea. They benefit from cooling winds and an excellent southerly exposure and have great elegance and length. Made from organically grown Sangiovese and Ciliegiolo grapes, Passonaia is patiently matured in French oak for added finesse and richness. Superb with roast lamb or beef.
