Stéphane Ogier Syrah de Seyssuel L'Âme Soeur 2016

Collines Rhodaniennes IGP

A 91–93 point red with humble IGP status – but its quality far exceeds that. Ogier is one of the Rhône’s top winemakers. Here he uses Syrah from schist soil vineyards, aged in 20% new oak for 18 months. Seductive raspberry with meaty notes and grip.

Wine Spectator described Stéphane Ogier’s wines as “dynamic and elite”, while Wine Advocate wrote “the estate is unquestionably in the top handful of domaines in the Rhône Valley”. Stéphane took over from his father in the late 1990s, added to the vineyards extensively – he owns 10 hectares in Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu and Saint Joseph – and built himself a gleaming, modern cellar in 2017. Terroir is his raison d’être. The Syrah vines are only 15 years old, still relatively young, but the quality is remarkable. Yields from the mica schist soils are naturally low, and winemaking is exemplary. Any wine from Stéphane Ogier is a treat. And this superb 2016 is a glorious expression of grape and terroir. Just 580 cases were made, so don’t hold back!
