Split Rock Riesling 2014

Nelson

This off-dry aromatic Riesling comes from the oldest boutique family winery on New Zealand’s South Island, one that beat even Cloudy Bay to world class quality. The Aussies make wonderful, limey Rieslings but just wait till you taste it the Kiwi way.

Named after the distinctive Split Apple Rock in Abel Tasman National Park, this wine is from Austrian born Hermann Seifried, who built his pioneering winery nearby in 1973. All the fruit for Split Rock was selected from Hermann’s own vineyards (one planted in the 1970s, the other in the late 1990s) in Nelson, a region well protected from the vagaries of the weather by mountains to the east, west and south. It’s pure Riesling, a grape that has once more become popular largely thanks to the exceptionally approachable wines being produced by New Zealand and Australia. The wine is slightly off dry yet with more than enough bracing, natural acidity to make it perfectly balanced. Terrific with lighter Far East Asian cuisine, and fresh shellfish.

"This Kiwi really delivers, with fresh blossomy aromas, a whisper of sweetness, peachy citrusy fruit" Sarah Henderson
