Not only can England lay claim to being among the earliest pioneers of sparkling wine, the soil and climate on the South Downs compare most favourably with that of Champagne. So much so that some renowned Champagne houses are investing in England, and one has attempted to buy this very estate. But the Roberts family are having none of it. As undoubted leader in the field of English fizz they have won countless awards, including the IWSC’s World Wide Trophy for Best Sparkling Wine and the McAlpine Trophy for Winemaker of the Year 2009. No wonder Jancis Robinson calls this “England’s vinous glory – fizz made in the image of Champagne”. This rosé has delicate red berry fruit and toasty hints – a joy solo or with canapés or summer berry fruits.
