Silky, juicy-berry Malbec from Argentina’s San Juan. It’s from Bodegas Antigua, whose HQ (built in 1918) is one of the area’s first earthquake proof buildings. The owners are proud of its history and the aromatic freshness of this supple fruit red.

Argentina’s Malbec is one of the trendiest wines on the planet. Most comes from Mendoza, but further north lies San Juan, with vineyards at altitudes of around 700 metres. There you’ll find Bodegas Antigua. The estate was founded in 1990 by Don Luis Victor Chirino. A builder by trade and a huge wine enthusiast, he bought two wineries and land to plant with vines. His headquarters is a historic building which in 1990 required considerable restoration. Within four years it had been transformed into a magnificent cellar, with an art gallery and museum alongside it, thanks to Don Luis’ wife Azucena, who enlisted the help of local artists whose work she exhibits. Sierra del Plata is a charming red to drink solo or with grilled meats or pasta.
