Argentina’s Malbec is one of the trendiest wines on the planet. Most comes from Mendoza, but further north lies San Juan, with vineyards at altitudes of around 700 metres. There you’ll find Bodegas Antigua. The business was founded in 1990 by Don Luis Victor Chirino. A builder by trade, but a huge wine enthusiast too, he bought two wineries and land to plant with vines. His headquarters is a historic building which in 1990 required considerable restoration. Within four years it had been transformed into a magnificent cellar, with an art gallery and museum alongside it, thanks to Don Luis’ wife Azucena, who enlisted the help of local artists. This is the family’s fine Malbec, made from hand picked grapes, matured in seasoned oak barrels.

"An alternative to Mendoza Malbec – here's one from Argentina's San Juan. Lovely silky black fruit" Beth Willard
