With gum-studded vineyards in the rolling Willunga Hills, Shottesbrooke is a small, family owned winery in eastern McLaren Vale, just a few minutes from the cool hills of Adelaide. They make many wines from their homeland, but search out pockets of quality grapes from elsewhere for their Discovery Series. The aim is to match the grape to its finest region, and this may change from year to year. In 2015 it was South Australia’s Padthaway. Close to the ocean, Padthaway’s vines benefit from cooling breezes, so there’s a bright mineral streak alongside the orchard fruit ripeness, while lees ageing adds roundness. As you can taste here, the wine ages well too. Serve in large bowled glasses and swirl. Partner with chicken pie or barbecued salmon.
