This is a really delicious Minervois – thanks partly to great terroir and partly to the vintage. The downside in 2018 was lots of rain in spring, then warmth, which led to perfect humid conditions for mildew. No problem if you were vigilant in the vineyard, but disastrous for some. The good news was fabulous, hot, dry weather from late June through to harvest and high quality grapes, with lovely maturity and lots of rich flavour in the wines. Add to that the age of the vines – over 80 years old – at Roc Saint Constant and you have lovely intensity too. Whole bunch fermentation has brought out the gorgeous fruity flavours of the grapes and a minimum of tannins. This is lush, rich and charming – a splendid red for hearty cassoulet or lamb.
