Sam's Block Viognier 2016

Padthaway

This is an exciting new white from Australia’s ocean cooled Padthaway. The climate there really brings out the bright blossom scents of Viognier. Using grapes from top grower Sam Ward, this wine offers luscious, ripe peach, spice and stony freshness.

Sam Ward and his family have been nurturing their prized block of vines in Padthaway for 70 years now. Lying close to the ocean, the climate is cooler, while the soils promote smaller yields and superb intensity of flavour. Sam grows all his grapes sustainably, using sheep to keep weeds in check and tending all the vines by hand to minimise his footprint. 20 years ago he planted Viognier and this is the delicious result. Maturity of the vines promotes concentration, as does pruning and green harvesting to reduce yields. Cool fermentation and lees ageing captures delicious fruit, freshness, and lovely underlying creaminess. Sam was particularly excited about the quality in 2016. He recommends drinking this wine with seafood off the barbie.
