Royal Tokaji Yellow Muscat 2016

White Dry Quality Wine

Hungary’s remarkable Tokaj region has enjoyed royal patronage for 400 years. From the country’s most exciting cellar, this is not their normal honeyed nectar, but a wonderfully fresh, aromatic, dry Muscat with delectable blossom and grapey notes.

Since 1600 Hungary’s Tokaj region has produced sweet Aszú wines, regarded as some of the finest in the world. However, Tokaj is now discovering how its top quality grapes can make fresh, pure and aromatic dry whites, too. This is in large part thanks to the Royal Tokaji Company – the brainchild of the world’s favourite wine writer, Hugh Johnson. With foreign investment, he helped found it in 1990. From the outset their aim was to make “wine that would make angels sing out loud in praise” (HJ). To this end they acquired 20 First Growth and 60 Second Growth vineyards. Most of their wines are a modern version of Tokaji Aszú. However, they also produce a tiny quantity of wonderfully crisp, fragrant Muscat. Chill down and serve as an apéritif.
