Rocksand Shiraz (magnum) 2018

Vinho Regional Península de Setúbal

A gorgeous, rich Shiraz that’s not from Oz, but from an award winning estate and winemaker in Portugal. Sandy soils and abundant sunshine make for a big, spicy, powerful red that’s a pleasure to serve, even more so from an impressive magnum.

Not only has this family estate won over 70 Golds in the last 12 years, but also ‘Best Wine in the World’. That was for their Shiraz in 2008! The secret to this weighty, spice packed red is the sandy soils, which hold little rain for the vines, plus the hot sun. The result is a modest yield of small berries crammed with juicy flavour. With this style of wine, award winning winemaker Jaime Quendera is forging a reputation for Setúbal’s rich, bold reds. Mostly Shiraz along with a splash of the local Alicante, Jaime finished the wine in expensive oak barrels to add a spicy, vanilla lift to the blueberry, blackberry and peppery fruit. Pour into large glasses from your magnum and serve with chorizo sausages, a hearty stew or the Sunday roast.
