This former 18th century hunting lodge and ornate château lies on the edge of Saint-Julien. No wonder, then, the wines of Belgrave have a similar richness and finesse, but just beyond the boundary, offer good value. The estate was adopted by the Dourthe family in 1979, who have transformed it. Refurbishment of the cellar and a restructuring of the property’s extensive vineyards were the start. 2005 is one of the top years this century, producing wines with both glorious ripe fruit and ageing potential. Aged in fine French oak barriques for 14 months, this Cabernet-based wine has layers of complex, mature fruit and subtle spice, all with delicious length. Stand upright for a few hours to allow any sediment to settle. Ideal served with game.
