High in the hills of Catalonia, cooler temperatures promote fresher, juicier fruit than you’d find in wines from Spain’s sun-baked plains. Add a little oak and you have this Tempranillo with its berry notes and gentle creamy spice from time in cask.

Rivalling many a young Rioja, Roqueta Tempranillo Barrel Selection 2016 is a smooth, fruity red with a hint of oak. It’s from Pla de Bages, just north of Barcelona and in the foothills of the Pyrenees. It was crafted by Montpellier trained Juan Soler at a state of the art winery that sits alongside impressive 800 year old buildings built by the Roqueta family’s distant ancestors. Key to the wine’s fragrance and rich fruit is the altitude of the vineyards and corresponding disparity between day and night temperatures. This ensures a longer growing period for the grapes and greater aroma and flavour. Enjoy this Tempranillo on its own or with spicy Catalan style sausages, chicken, paella type dishes, or char-grilled Mediterranean vegetables.
