Ramón Roqueta Las Barracas Gran Reserva 2015

Cataluna DO

Long-aged Gran Reserva with toasty spice and silk fruit – and it’s not Rioja. It’s from a 12th-century cellar in Pla de Bages near Barcelona, which combines centuries of tradition with the latest technology. A gorgeously complex, smoky fruit red.

The Roquetas are an ancient winemaking family, who can trace their history in Pla de Bages back to 1199. Now over 800 years old, the original buildings are still standing, alongside a very modern winery. The estate is based north of Barcelona, in the foothills of the Pyrenees. Key to the fruit and freshness of their wines is the altitude of the vineyards. High up, the vines enjoy hot, sunny days in summer and a big drop in temperature at night. This luxurious red was made by talented winemaker Juan Soler, who added a small portion of crunchy Cabernet to the Tempranillo grapes for extra richness and depth. Two years ageing in a mix of French and American oak has mellowed the wine beautifully. Enjoy with roast lamb or a saffron-scented pilaf.
