Oz Clarke lists Quinta do Casal Branco among Portugal’s top producers of the “aromatic and very versatile” Fernão Pires grape. Here it’s blended with Sauvignon Blanc to make a most refreshing garden white or partner for seafoods and salads. Quinta do Casal Branco is an old, aristocratic estate on the east bank of the river Tagus, just north of Lisbon. The property, once a favourite retreat of Portugal’s royal family, has been owned by the Lobo de Vasconcellos family for the last 200 years. Since taking over, José Lobo de Vasconcellos has made the estate one of the most innovative in the country. Today winemaker Joana Lopes, assisted by consultant Manuel Lobo de Vasconcellos, makes some of the best value Portuguese wines you’ll find.
