Aroma
Violets and dark plum with mocha spice
Since Domingos Alves de Sousa took charge of the family vineyards in 1987, the estate has won over 400 awards, including ‘Portuguese Winery of the Year’, twice. He decided the family would stop selling off their precious grapes – some of the best in the valley – and start making port and table wine themselves. His son Tiago joined him in 2003 having completed a doctorate in viticulture and oenology. Tiago is now winemaker and hugely passionate about what he does, vinifying each tiny block from their six quintas separately and making impressive wines. This is from Quinta da Oliveirinha, the steep, high vineyards of which produce wonderfully concentrated fruit. Seven months in oak have added smoky mocha richness. Delicious with grilled meats.
