This is a lavish, fruit-filled red from winemaker Jeff Carrel in the Languedoc. It's recevied high praise and 90 points from The Wine Advocate, "an Old World fruit bomb that has tons of cassis, black raspberry, spice and licorice". Irresistible.

Jeff Carrel is an electic winemaker. Never one to follow rules, he prefers to follow his nose or, in this case, his palate, and make wines that taste great. He is based deep in the Languedoc and makes a raft of exciting wines there. With Puydeval he takes mostly Cabernet Franc (unusual in the Languedoc - it's better known in the Loire and Bordeaux). With this he blends herby, black fruit Syrah (30%) and a little plump Merlot. The result is this velvety red, loaded with black cherry, raspberry and spice which Wine Advocate described as "plump, sexy" with "tons of appeal" and "terrific value.” Magnums always add wow factor to an occasion, so pop this on your dinner table, centre stage. Great with roast meats, a casserole or at a barbecue.
