Sardinia’s Calasetta winery has always been a favourite for the jet-set and locals alike, and in the 1980s provided backbone and power for some of Italy’s greatest Super Tuscans. Enjoy tremendous black fruit intensity and punchy spice flavour.
Tasting notes
Intense, mouthfilling black fruits; hints of liquorice and leather
Aroma
Black plums, cherry, mulberry, sweet spice and wild herbs
There’s something remarkable about the Calasetta winery, if its winemakers are anything to go by – four of the team behind this alluring red are over 100 years in age. Indeed, the president is a sprightly 106, while the vice president is 96 – thus earning him the nickname of junior! Sardinia was known as the ‘island of wine’ in the 16th century and its reputation for powerful reds remains. It is not something Italy’s winemaking elite openly share, but back in the 1980s, producers of top Super Tuscans (£400 a bottle upwards) found that wine from Calasetta added silky richness and depth to their masterpieces – and so we’ve called this our ‘Super Sardinian’. The grapes, grown on sandy soil, are ungrafted, too. Enjoy with pork, lamb or lasagne.
