Polkura Lote D Syrah 2013

Valle de Colchagua

If you’re looking for seriously good, fruit first Chilean Syrah, forget X because D marks the spot. In this case it’s Lote D – a small, inaccessible plot where the fruit’s normally reserved for premium cuvées. Only bottled pure in special vintages.

In the know Chile fans will already be aware how good Polkura’s wines are. However, if you’ve yet to taste the offerings from Sven Bruchfeld and Gonzalo Muñoz, you’re setting the bar high with Lote D. It’s made with fruit from the prime vineyard site on their estate. Most years the entire harvest is set aside for ultra premium blends but in vintages of plenty when there’s a surplus of super ripe Syrah, Sven and Gonzalo craft Lote D. It’s designed to be their perfect expression of Colchagua Syrah, so it’s crafted without seeing a splinter of oak to let the spiced blackberry fruit shine through. Mature and evolved, it’s a gorgeous red to enjoy solo but equally good alongside grilled beef with a spicy marinade. Sublime with strong cheeses too.
