Bodegas Pirineos was bought by the renowned Barbadillo family in 2007. They were a driving force in getting the tiny region of Somontano recognised as a proper DO in 1984 and remain today one of the leading wineries. Jesús Astrain has been a winemaker there since 1993 and is also regarded as leading in the region, as well as being hugely respected throughout the rest of Spain. For this white, he has worked with the region's small, independent growers to source high altitude, old vine Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer and Macabeo grapes, then lees aged the wine for added complexity. The result is an impressive, crisp white with lovely tropical fruit and peach character, a hint of spice and excellent freshness. Ideal with seafood and lighter dishes.
