Bodegas Pirineos was founded as a co-operative in 1964, privatised in 1993 and bought by the renowned Barbadillo family in 2007. They were a driving force in getting the tiny region of Somontano recognised as a proper DO in 1984 and remain today one of the leading wineries. Jesús Astrain has been a winemaker there since 1993 and is also regarded as leading in the region. He is hugely respected throughout Spain. He has worked with the region's small growers to source high altitude, non-irrigated, old vine Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha and Moristel grapes. The result is an impressively smooth and fresh red with abundant red and black fruit flavour and hints of sweet spice. It makes an ideal partner to roast lamb or portobello mushrooms.
