Pieropan has been leading the field in wine in NE Italy since 1890. First they produced magnificent Soave. Then, in 2000, third-generation Leonildo and his two sons decided to purchase Monte Garzon, a very fine estate in the Valpolicella region. Their aim: to reach the same great heights of excellence with red wines there. They planted organic vineyards from scratch, restored the beautiful 18th-century house and built a cellar below it. It's quite something to behold. The grapes for this superb Amarone are all handpicked from vineyards up to 500 metres altitude, so even though the wine is 16.5%, there's still a freshness and floral note. Naturally dried grapes are fermented and the wine aged over two years in cask. Open early and decant.
