Who’d have thought that Portugal’s Alentejo would be a haven for Shiraz? Yet with pockets of ‘terra rossa’ soil similar to that in Australia’s hallowed Barossa region (where this much loved grape is king), it ripens to perfection. This velvety red was made by superstar winemaker Jaime Quendera, who in the last 10 years has won more than 300 international awards for his wines. Quinta das Mouras is a new estate in Alentejo. It was founded in 2000 by businessman Francisco Colaço do Rosário, who bought 226 hectares of vineyards and filled his cellar with every bit of high tech gadgetry on the market. In an excellent position, the vineyards produce grapes with real depth of flavour, which you’ll taste in this great red. Excellent with lamb.

"Go to Portugal for great-value reds with oomph. Oozes seductive, musky, smoky, violet-scented fruit" Jane MacQuitty
