A good Rioja Reserva like Palacio del Burgo has a lot going for it. Not least the subtle, integrated aromas and flavours of expensive maturation in oak. There’s also the age. The 2010 vintage has mellowed beautifully and is in its prime right now.

More information
Bodegas de Familia Burgo Viejo is a modern estate in Rioja’s eastern district of Alfaro, 45 minutes from the capital Logroño and 50 miles south of Pamplona. This fine Reserva is a blend of Tempranillo, Graciano and Carignan aged in French and American oak barrels for 18 months. It comes highly recommended by Wine Spectator, whose panel awarded it 93 points, and it won a prestigious Gold medal at London’s International Wine Challenge. A few years have passed since this wine was bottled, so decant it into a jug or decanter and allow it an hour or two to breathe. You will find its mature fruits, black pepper and vanilla character complement roast lamb, Manchego cheese or a game casserole (rabbit or hare are local favourites) really well.
