Palacio de Menade 2016

Castilla y Leon VdT

If you’re a fan of the increasingly brilliant, Sauvignon like whites of northwest Spain, you’ll adore this gem from Castilla y León. What makes it extra special is the unusual blend of Sauvignon and local hero Verdejo, all grassy fresh and lemony.

As The Guardian has noted, “Palacio de Menade has a fine, cool vibrancy that will appeal to those who relish Sancerre.” You see, just like that famous area of the Loire, Castilla y León, Rueda in particular, has fine chalky soils, ideal for aromatic whites. Although grown here for 1,000 years, Verdejo is only now coming to the fore internationally thanks to modern know-how – early morning harvesting and the ‘blanketing’ of grapes with inert gas straight after picking to protect them from oxidation. Full marks to local supremos the Sanz family, who combine six generations of tradition with state of the art technology. Palacio’s breezy, citrus and apricot freshness is perfect for pairing with fresh seafood, canapés or a smoked salmon salad.
