The superbly rich and smooth Black Barrel is a unique, small batch, handcrafted rum created to commemorate the 310th anniversary of the Mount Gay Rum estate in Barbados, officially founded in 1703 but with roots extending back to the 16th century.
The original sugar plantation and distillery were acquired by William Sandiford in the early 18th century. In 1747 the property passed into the hands of John Sober, who appointed Sir John Gay Alleyne as manager. So successful was Sir John that the estate was renamed Mount Gay. Now it is owned by Rémy Cointreau and, benefiting greatly from this company’s wide distribution network, Mount Gay Rum has become very popular all around the world. What distinguishes Black Barrel? Although it is made from single column and double pot distilled rum, just like other Mount Gay rums, Black Barrel uses a higher proportion of double pot distillates. And, importantly, it is finished in heavily charred bourbon barrels (hence the name) before bottling.
"One of the richest, finest, most intensely spicy rums I have had the pleasure of sipping"
