A visit to the Andresen cellars is like stepping back in time to the 19th century. With all the barrels of ancient port quietly resting, you sense the respect for traditions which have been in place since the company began in 1845. As you walk through the cellars, you become aware of an enticing aroma which only time and passion can create. You start to appreciate how carefully these ports are looked after, like works of art in a museum. Throughout the 1970s, '80s, '90s and noughties this exquisite wine lay undisturbed in vast old wooden vats. Now at last you can enjoy its mesmerising qualities - heady scents and complex, sweet and nutty, Christmas cake and date flavours. Serve alongside a roaring fire with cheese, almonds and dried fruits.
