Newton Johnson Southend Chardonnay 2016

Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley

Classy, elegant Chardonnay from a dynamic Cape estate near Hermanus in Walker Bay. It’s a family affair with father, sons and wives involved. Atlantic breezes ensure the wine has lovely crisp apple fruit and minerality. More Chablis than Meursault!

The Newton Johnson family have established themselves among South Africa’s premium producers in just 20 years. This delicious Chardonnay demonstrates a commitment to quality and a talent for making stand-out wines of great value and finesse. The winery is near the coastal town of Hermanus, to which tourists flock for great food and wine, and whale watching! Grapes were sourced from 800 metre high vineyards where an idyllic climate delivers a superb balance of ripe peach fruit and freshness. Though fermented and aged in barrel, the oak is still subtle. “A Chardonnay worth tasting and worth much more than its price – vitality like a Premier Cru Chablis” says Hugh Johnson. Serve lightly chilled with salmon steaks, lobster, scallops or chicken.

"Really good citrus/limey flavours, lifted acidity, good weight and complexity. Very good" Steven Spurrier
