"Pier Paolo Monti may be King of Barolo, but he makes a hugely impressive and hefty, dense Merlot too"
Buyer for Italy
With a fine cellar in the Langhe hills of Piedmont, Pier Paolo Monti is, to many, the 'King of Barolo'. But, remarkably, the wine which tops his magnificent Barolo in terms of quality (and usually price) is his Merlot. To fine wine aficionados, it's the grape more often associated with Saint Emilion and Pomerol, yet Pier Paolo Monti's wine challenges even these Bordeaux greats by virtue of its power and richness. Aged for three years in seasoned French oak, it has a complex array of flavours and carries on maturing gracefully. Dense cherry, with tarry toasty oak and liquorice notes, it's velvety yet retains plenty of grip on the finish. A rounded and beautifully balanced wine to serve with a hearty game casserole or roast lamb or beef.
