The Roquetas are an ancient winemaking family, who can trace their history in Pla de Bages back to 1199. Now 800 years old, the original winery buildings are still standing, alongside a very modern cellar. The estate lies just north of Barcelona, in the foothills of the Pyrenees. Key to the fruit and freshness of their wines is the altitude of the vineyards, which ensures hot, sunny days in summer and a big drop in temperature at night. This toasty red was made by talented winemaker Juan Soler, who added a portion of crunchy Cabernet to the Tempranillo grapes for extra richness and depth. Two years’ ageing in a mix of French and American oak, the rest in bottle, has mellowed the wine. Enjoy with roast lamb or a paprika spiked casserole.
